Basically it’s simple. There is Harry, there are melos, there are westerns. And then there is Ruthless, this fascinating film that sits right up there. Here, probably for the last time at this level of genius, Clint Eastwood plays on his two favorite playing fields. He is the masochistic movie star banking on his own personality as a charming and sophisticated old man, and he is the filmmaker making the wounds of the soul bleed, inhabiting the ghosts of the past. Its hero, a former outlaw converted to livestock farming, will bring out the guns, but to avenge a damsel in distress. No longer truly alive and not completely dead, he wanders the West, haunted by visions of his other life, charged with bringing justice and cleaning up the town – symbolically, the foundations of the house of America. In Ruthless, Eastwood reaches a point of balance that he has never reached before and will never reach again. Everything we love about him is there, at an incandescent degree of purity: the supreme narrator, the hero of inherited violence and redemptive impasse, the storyteller focused on the tragic destiny of his characters. The incredible prologue, the shot of the grave, the outbreak of violence in the hotel, Gene Hackman… A masterpiece? No better than that. One of the greatest films in cinema history.
