Migration: a mischievous animated film (review)

When the co-director of Ernest and Célestine meets the creator of The White Lotus… A new gem from the Illumination studio.

For Illumination, Migration is the next movie. Like a cherry on an already extremely copious cake: their previous production, Super Mario Bros.to date the most profitable film of 2023. Their first project also which is neither a sequel (Despicable Me 3, Like beasts 2, All in scene 2, Minions 2) or an adaptation (Super Mario so and The Grinch) Since All on stage in 2016. And the new is also there with the duo brought together to develop this original story: the co-director ofErnest and Celestine and the creator of The White Lotusthe French Benjamin Renner for his first adventure across the Atlantic and the American Mike White.

On the program: the adventures of a family of mallards leaving their peaceful New England pond for the first time and confronting their fears of the unknown for a great journey to Jamaica via New York. A hymn to leaping into the void, to the need to leave one’s comfort zone to enjoy life which is mainly aimed at the youngest, populated by irresistibly mischievous characters and an undeniable sense of rhythm. But it is above all the success of Renner’s transition (with the help of another Frenchman Guylo Homsy) from a minimalist animation style to computer animation and 3D which proves to be a real success.

Migration will amaze you (great scenes in a Big Apple covered in morning fog) without ever falling into the race to impress. It’s joyful, tender without being revolutionary, certainly, but devilishly effective.

Of Benjamin Renner and Guylo Homsy. With the voices (in VO) of Kumail Nanjiani, Elizabeth Banks, Awkafina… Duration 1h22. Released December 6, 2023
