Mission Impossible 6: the incredible making-of of the plane scene

We see Tom Cruise jump into the void… without special effects. But, fortunately, with a parachute.

Mission: Impossible – Fallout was released in the summer of 2018, but it’s never too late to discover behind the scenes: the action film will return tonight on M6. An action scene that takes place both aboard a plane and in free fall caused a lot of talk when it was released in 2018. As he faces August Walker, alias Henry Cavill, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) must jump into the void to pursue his enemy. Photos had been posted in March on the director’s Instagram, Christopher McQuarrie, to prepare for the film’s release. The filmmaker added in the caption: “Just one last shot. At 7km, at 320km/h, at dusk. Three minutes of light available. Two minutes of action. One chance a day. Just one. Just one last shot.“

A few months later, a video of the shooting was posted on Twitter. A montage to understand how the spectacular sequence in question had been filmed.

We can see the duo of Tom Cruise and the cameraman launch into the void, as well as a comparison with the shots seen in the film. If effects were subsequently added, they only bring texture to the image, like the clouds in which the characters get lost in the film. For the rest, the director felt it was necessary to make a real leap, as he explains on his account: “The horizon was real, as was the relationship between cameraman and actor. We tried in a wind tunnel and the result was rotten.“

Exit therefore the tunnel in which we place the actors facing the wind, we needed authentic plans to Mission: Impossible – Fallout. And then Tom Cruise was no longer that close. After clinging to a plane during its takeoff, having jumped between two buildings even if it meant breaking your ankle, climbing a skyscraper while facing violent winds at the top, learning to drive and pilot all kinds of vehicles… what is it? what a parachute jump, next?
