In a short making-of published by Amazon Prime Video, Donald Glover bluntly announces: “People have no idea what this series will be”. Really ? According to the two stars, the main difference will come from the tone of the series. “People have a certain idea of what it might be, because Mr. and Mrs. Smith is a popular film, but the tone will be very different”, promises the actor.
Maya Erskine jokes on the contrary about their resumption of the glamorous roles of Brad Pitt And Angelina Jolie : “I think it’s exactly like the movie and we’re exactly like Brad and Angelina.” The actress gives more detail on the difference in tone addressed by Glover: “If we have to talk about differences, in this series we complete missions together, but we have to take breaks as a married couple. So it becomes a real relationship with the spy series genre in the background.”
The other big difference with the film lies in the basis of the couple. In the 2005 version, Mr. and Mrs. Smith are two spies from different services. They meet during a mission, fall in love and become a couple while hiding their spy work from each other. The series is more similar to the original soap opera created in 1996. Here, Donald Glover And Maya Erskine play two lone spies recruited to form a duo during missions with all the advantages that implies (adventure, travel, luxurious life). But they are forced to accept one condition: they must get married.
We then follow an arranged couple who build themselves from mission to mission. Donald Glover reassures fans, the action will be present in the series: “We will have our gunfights, our fights and our explosions, of course it will happen.” He explains that they deliberately played with the intensity to surprise the audience. These updates from Mr and Mrs. Smith “are mediocre students in a gifted class” he finally declares about the two characters.
The series will therefore be a mix of action, romance and comedy, and it will be available on Amazon Prime Video from February 2, 2024.
