Nolan disagrees with Scorsese’s criticism of superhero films
“It’s always been part of the Hollywood economy,” judges the Dark Knight director.
We know the position of Martin Scorsese against superhero films, which according to him are not real cinema. Many directors have supported Scorsese’s comments, but Christopher Nolan wanted him to stand out from it. In an interview given to GQthe British filmmaker recently acclaimed for the success ofOppenheimerexpressed his disagreement, while his colleague brought the subject back to the fore by declaring that superhero films represented a “danger for our culture… because there are going to be generations now who think that films are just those.”
Martin Scorsese did not stop there by encouraging the crème de la crème of filmmakers to fight against this superheroic hegemony: “We will then have to fight back harder. (…) This must come from the filmmakers themselves. And you’ll have, you know, brothers Safdie, and you’ll have Chris Nolan, you know what I mean? And hit them from all sides. Hit them from all sides and don’t give up. Let’s see what you have. Go ahead and do it. Go reinvent”, enthused the filmmaker.
Even if Christopher Nolan has earned the respect of his American elder, let’s not forget that he is the author of the trilogy The Dark Knight, about the character Batman, one of the most popular superhero works of all time. For his part, the director ofOppenheimer makes a more nuanced statement: “There’s always a balance in Hollywood between established titles that can provide audience returns and give people more of what they want, that’s always been a big part of the Hollywood economy” (via AP).
Nolan also adds the advantages of this economic model, which can appear as a virtuous circle: “This allows many other types of films to be made and distributed. But you also always have to respect the audience’s desire for something new… that’s one of the great feelings of going to the cinema, frankly, to see a trailer for a film you’ve never heard of talk…a type of movie you’ve never seen.”
“A healthy ecosystem in Hollywood is possible through the balance of these two aspects”, he concludes. Measured words which allow us to nourish the debate launched a few years ago, which will allow us to form our own opinion on the large offer of Marvel and DC films in the Hollywood industry.
