The Marvels: the shortest MCU film is far from the best (review)

Only 1h45: why The Marvels is the shortest film in the entire MCU

Director Nia DaCosta is forced to explain the surprising length of the Captain Marvel sequel.

While The Marvels comes out tomorrow in theaters, the sequel to Captain Marvel arrives with a strange status: that of the shortest film of all MCU ! 105 minutes watch in hand, or 1h45 including credits, we have never seen this in the Marvel cinematographic universe, at a time when blockbusters of less than 2 hours are now the exception.

So much so that the director of the film, Nia DaCostamust defend himself and explain (in Digital Spy):

“I really wanted this film to be under 2 hours. In fact, I always think about length when I start a film. I just felt like there was no need to make it too long . Because 1 hour 45 minutes is a rather ordinary duration and we found it exciting!”

Nia DaCosta continues his analysis and judges that, sometimes, certain films do too much: “I think you just have to do what’s right for your film and to be honest, I wasn’t even aware that we were the shortest film in the MCU until it was brought to my attention.

No worries for fans, even if the pleasure will be brief, it will be intense according to the director, who promises that short duration does not mean less action:

“We’ve been diving into these women’s fighting stories that Marvel has been developing for some time. They’re fighting against each other and we see a lot of that in this movie. Good because I love the scenes of fight. I was very excited to do it and I’m very proud of the final fight scene. It’s something you’ve never seen before in the MCU, because of the nature of it, the switch between character powers…”

The Marvels is released this Wednesday, November 8 in cinemas in France.
