Patty Jenkins working on her Star Wars movie again after Wonder Woman 3 cancellation
Rogue Squadron is being talked about again…
The project Star Wars of Patty Jenkins is perhaps not completely buried. This new episode initially planned for the end of 2020 in cinemas promised to focus on the fighter pilots of the galactic universe, previously explored in a few episodes, notably during the epic Battle of Hoth between the Galactic Empire and the Rebel Alliance . Since its announcement, however, it has continued to be postponed, and in September 2023, Disney removed the title from its calendar. Variety then reported that the Rogue Squadron was no longer in development at Lucasfilm.
In a new interview on the podcast Talking Picturesthe director of the traumatic Monsterwith Charlize Theron, announced that she was taking back control of the screenplay for Rogue Squadron, after the dissolution of his project Wonder Woman 3 at Warner Bros. and DC Studios. Variety contacted Lucasfilm to find out more.
“When I left Star Wars to do Wonder Woman 3and I started working on it, we had talked about going back to Star Wars just after the production of Wonder Womanso we had made a deal to make this happen, said Patty Jenkins. We made the deal just as the strike was starting, so now I owe a draft of Star Wars. So we'll see what happens there. Who knows ?”
“They have their work cut out for them, what is the first film they are going to make? added Patty Jenkins about Lucasfilm. They have other directors who worked on it, but now I'm back doing Rogue Squadron. We'll see what happens.”
Rogue Squadron has not yet been officially announced, but Patty Jenkins claims to be working on a script. She said she would beabsolutely“happy to do so, adding: “The excitement generated by Star Wars and what it represents is something so beautiful in this world… If I can make something beautiful and do something that serves this audience, I would love to do it.“
Previously, Patty Jenkins was developing a third episode of Wonder Womanwith Gal Gadot. Without wanting to skip steps, Rogue Squadron seemed to have been placed on the sidelines due to the superheroic project. In December 2022, rumors speculated that Patty Jenkins had thrown in the towel and pulled out of the DC Universe film. The news broke shortly after James Gunn And Peter Safran took over the reins of DC Studios and announced that they would reform the DC Universe.
“I never lefthad tweeted Patty Jenkins at the time. I was open to considering whatever was asked of me. I understood that there was nothing I could do to move things forward at the moment. Obviously, DC is immersed in the changes it needs to make, so I understand these decisions are difficult right now.”
About an hour after the director released her statement, James Gunn supported her on X by responding: “I can attest that all of you and Peter's interactions were pleasant and professional..”
In fact, the filmmaker could only confirm that the journey of Wonder Woman had ended “for now, possibly forever.” She achieved both Wonder Woman And Wonder Woman 1984making her one of Hollywood's most prominent directors.
“They are not interested in making a Wonder Woman For now, also said Patty Jenkins. It's not an easy task, with what's going on with DC. James Gunn and Peter Safran must follow their own plans. I don't know what they plan to do or why, so I have sympathy for the magnitude of their work and they need to follow their hearts and do what they set out to do.“
If Patty Jenkins is working towards the realization of Rogue Squadron, it will be the first time that a film in this universe is directed by a woman – enough to make the (Hollywood) stars shine.
