Pixar’s Red Alert and Luca will finally be released in cinemas in France

But only one Sunday each, during the February and April school holidays.

Last weekend, Drunk came out exceptionally in American theaters. This animated film, a new Pixar in theaters, was released directly on Disney+ three years ago, and it started 22nd in the top thanks to $429,000 collected in 1,350 theaters. A strategy which will be renewed soon with Red alert Or Lucas from the same studio, Disney having expressed its wish to offer a few screenings of its recent animated films which had not had the right to a theatrical release.

Soul directly on Disney +: “To be honest, it was like a punch in the gut”

We did not yet know if this programming would also be planned outside the United States, but during the week, the studio communicated on the French broadcast of these same feature films. If the case of Drunk has not yet been announced, Red alert And Lucas will indeed be offered at cinemas in France, but only for one day, and for more than 500 screenings each.

To (re)see the story of the young girl transforming into a red panda as soon as she is subjected to great emotion, go to the cinemas Sunday February 18, 2024. And to (re)see the boy’s funny vacation in Italy, you will have to go to the cinemas April 14, 2024. Two dates which are not chosen at random, since the young spectators in France will then be in the middle of school holidays.

The decision to reveal Soul, Red Alert And Lucas directly in streaming had caused a lot of ink to flow at the time of their respective broadcast. Not to mention that Disney did this again in France more recently with Avaloniaan original sci-fi film which had just flopped in the US.

All these films are, however, full of visual and narrative qualities. All of them would have fully deserved a theatrical release from the start, but the studio preferred to offer them directly in streaming to boost their new platform, Disney +. Which led to the anger of their animatorsdisappointed to see their work for Pixar no longer have the honor of cinemas, except if their films were part of big franchises, like Buzz Lightning.

Afterwards, the company cannot completely reverse course and offer these films in cinemas as classic releases. Now that streaming has been favored, we must respect the media chronology. Which explains the exceptional broadcast of the two feature films: only for one day and with a limited number of screenings across France.

Lucas is the Call Me by Your Name by Pixarwe wrote in June 2021 about Enrico Casarosa’s film. A pleasant youthful adventure, which takes place in a small fantasy Italian village in the Cinque Terre, very down-to-earth, accumulating clichés via an animation which has the good taste of remaining simple, lively and carnal.” Our full review is worth reading here.

As for Red alert, it was one of the editorial staff’s favorites in March 2022 despite its too many references and emotions. After his surprising short film Baodirector Domee Shi created a daring work about adolescence, and a nice nod to her own childhood at the turn of the 1990s/2000s. “A story of transmission between several generations of women and sorority told with great panache”we wrote in our long critical.
