Puss in Boots 2 – The Last Quest: an irresistible sequel (review)

The return of the Shrek saga goes through Puss in Boots. We didn't believe it for a second, and yet this sequel is a great action/adventure film.

Netflix has just released an excellent animated film: Puss in Boots 2. Yes, the sequel to the spin-off of Shrek is a success, both on a storyline and a visual level, as it offers so many ideas every second.

We are sharing our review, initially published at the end of 2022 for its cinema release, interspersed with interviews with its creators.

Let's start with some good news: the franchise Shrek didn't die, she was just asleep. And so it is Puss in Boots, whose last appearance on the big screen dates back eleven years, who is responsible for waking her up. And it will be more than a gentle tap on the shoulder, let's talk about a real shake.

The Last Quest, an unexpected and unexpected sequel, confronts the hero with his own mortality: he has exhausted eight of his nine lives and is pursued by a bloodthirsty wolf determined to kill him. The time has come for Puss in Boots to hang up his cape and sword and vegetate with an old lady who already shelters a countless number of stray cats. But the formidable Goldilocks and his gang of Three Bears suddenly arrive, forcing him to abandon the litter he had just learned to use to put himself on the trail of a mythical star, capable of carrying out any wish…

Visually breathtaking (you would think you were seeing an impressionist painting come to life) and contrary to the photo-realism of Shrek, Puss in Boots: The Last Quest is an action/adventure film at the height of a man – well, of a cat – driven at full speed, which embraces the clichés of the fairy tale to better transfigure them. Director Joel Crawford (The Croods 2) borrows as much from the darkness of the stories of the Brothers Grimm as from the sense of the framework of Leone or Kurosawa. An exciting cinema shoot, and the great animated entertainment that we no longer dared to dream of.
