Reunion with Tom Holland and mocking speech: Robert Downey Jr.’s crazy evening at the Critics Choice Awards

Oppenheimer’s star had already caused a sensation at the Golden Globes.

Robert Downey Jr. seems well on his way to receiving his first Oscar. Already nominated for Chaplinin 1993, then for Thunder in the tropicsin 2009, the 58-year-old actor should once again be in the running this year for his role as Lewis Strauss in Oppenheimer.

While waiting to know the nominations, he is acclaimed in other ceremonies: last weekend, he received the Golden Globe for best supporting actor for this film by Christopher Nolan and delivered a full second degree speech on his career. Yesterday, he won the Critics Choice Awards, and there too, he gave a memorable speech.

Big winner of the 2024 Golden Globes, Christopher Nolan salutes Heath Ledger, Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr.

“I was telling myself this morning that I love criticism, he begins by accepting the trophy for best supporting actor against Sterling K. Brown for American Fiction, Robert De Niro for Killers of the Flower Moon, Ryan Gosling for Barbie, Charles Melton for May December and Mark Ruffalo for Poor creatures. I got such wonderful feedback. Really, great moments, such poetic opinions. I’d like to share some of them with you.”

Here then is RDJ who throws out, in front of a hilarious audience, the worst criticisms received during his career.

“It was said of me that I was ‘neglected, messy and lazy’, he said, deadpan. It’s almost a haiku! The next one is more metaphorical: ‘It’s like Pee-Wee Herman woke up from a coma.’ This one comes from an Englishman (he puts on a British accent): ‘It’s an incredible waste of talent.’ And to finish, I will focus on a pearl: ‘He’s as funny as a fart stuck under the duvet.’

Becoming more serious again in the rest of his speech, Downey Jr. thanks his “oppenhomies” (“oppenpotes”), Cillian Murphy, Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas (his wife and producer), “the Holy Trinity” who made this film possible, as well as his acting partner Emily Blunt.

During the evening, RDJ also caused a sensation by meeting Tom Holland, his accomplice in the saga Avengers. Behind the scenes, the ex-Tony Stark was photographed giving a hug to the interpreter of Peter Parker, which obviously did not escape Marvel fans.
