Rick and Morty, season 7: “We have a plan for Evil Morty”

What place for the ugly cult of the series in the next episodes? We asked creator Dan Harmon and current showrunner Scott Marder.

He made a thunderous appearance in the season 1 finale (“Close Rick-counters of the Rick Kind”), almost ten years ago. And since then, fans of Rick and Morty see him as the perfect nemesis for the animated series. But when will return Evil Morty ?

“He will be back !” promises the creator Dan Harmon at Première, without specifying whether it will be in season 7 or later. But the showrunner Scott Marder immediately states: “He’s a character that fans love and yes, we have plans for him for the future…”

I have to say that Evil Morty has only made a handful of appearances over the 65 episodes the show has already aired. Last time, he was linked to the Citadel of Ricks, of which he had become the first Morty to be democratically elected president! Intrigues which now date from the third season (2017) and which found a form of conclusion in the finale of season 5, where Evil Morty ended up fleeing through a portal to an unknown destination.

So what’s the plan for Evil Morty long-term ?

Dan Harmon advises us not to theorize too much on the issue. Because even he didn’t imagine the character with a specific idea in mind: “Having too precise a plan in mind, very early on, is very complicated in today’s television.” explains the creator of Rick and Morty. The fans have a lot more time than us to dissect the plots, to theorize… So the chances that we can imagine and keep a secret plot around a plan that we would keep away from the fans… Frankly , setting up this kind of mystery or long-term revelation is not something we would be able to do well.”

Dan Harmon goes on to reveal that when a new character is created in Rick and Mortywe think of it more in terms of potential. We prefer to cultivate a cell that can evolve in all directions rather than a cell intended for a very specific objective. This is what happens with Evil Morty. We think, of course, meticulously about its impact on the series. But we didn’t decide very far in advance what was going to happen with him.”

And the showrunner, Scott Marder to confirm: “Let’s just say our plans for it have evolved over time…”

Season 7 of Rick and Morty continues every Monday on Adult Swim in France.
