Ridley Scott already saw the new Alien movie and thought it was “downright brilliant”

“I wanted Ridley Scott to see it before anyone else. And everyone let me know that Ridley was really tough…”

He’s under pressure! Director of Don’t Breathe And evil DeadFede Alvarez will try to relaunch the franchise Alien next year with the release of a sequel titled (for now) Alien: Romulus. Her mission will be to bring the franchise back to life. Ridley Scottwhich stopped after Prometheus (2012) and the flop Alien: Covenant (2017).

Questioned by Guillermo del Toro during the DGA Latino Summit 2023 (watch here in video), Álvarez announces that he has finished “his” editing, and he has “had to go through the incredibly tense process of showing the film to Ridley Scott !” He tells :

“I wanted Ridley Scott sees him before everyone else. And everyone had let me know that Ridley was really tough. He’s really tough, especially if it has anything to do with his movies. He was very hard on Blade Runner 2049, which, in my opinion, was a masterpiece. It was hard because it was really difficult for him to see his work taken back. I asked him about the new Top Gun and he replied: ‘Yeah… My brother’s was original and this one is ordinary.’ In short, I saw how scathing he could be, so I told myself that I couldn’t win with my film Alien.”

Fede Alvarez admits he was “terrified” to meet the British filmmaker in person, but he wanted to see the filmmaker, to hear his feedback on Alien: Romulus.

“Even if he hadn’t asked for it, I went there, I wanted to sit at a table facing him, look at him and understand what he had to say to me, eye to eye. didn’t want that by email… Because it could have been: ‘You destroyed my legacy!'”

But not at all. Ridley Scott – who is also lead producer on the project – was delighted with what Fede Alvarez made his saga. The Uruguayan director couldn’t believe his ears:

“He walked into the room and he said, ‘Fede, what can I say? This is fucking awesome!’ For me, it was like a dream… My family knows that it was one of the best moments of my life. Having a master like him, whom I admire so much, watching a film that I made and above all a movie Alien. Being able to talk with him for an hour about what he liked. And one of the best compliments he gave me was: ‘The dialogue is fantastic. Did you write them?’ Yes !’ “

Alien: Romulus is due out in theaters on August 16, 2024.
