Rings of Power: New Creatures Will Haunt Characters in Season 2

The showrunners of the Lord of the Rings spin-off series confirm a much darker atmosphere than in the first episodes.

Middle-earth has not yet finished revealing its darkest secrets. In the immense universe created by Tolkien, there remain unexplored lands and unknown creatures. If Peter Jackson delivered his vision of this world to the cinema twenty years ago with his trilogy of Lord of the Ringsthe Amazon Prime series, The Rings of Power, gives a new one – exploring the dark or forgotten corners of Tolkienian mythology. Thus, last month, fans were surprised by the announcement of the upcoming arrival of a legendary character from the novels – Tom Bombadil – who was greatly ousted and will (finally) have his moment of glory on the small screen. On the same subject, what other surprises does season two have in store?

Tom Bombadil will be in season 2 of Rings of Power!

Dedicating its next issue to the continuation of Rings of Power, British media Empire gave some answers and exclusively revealed that this tall, colorful man will not be the only new element in season two. On the dark side, new enemies will rise from the ground, like the undead – the Spirits of the Mounds.

Also called the Barrow-wights, these evil spirits live in the region of the Hillsides, or the Barrow-wights depending on the version. Sent by the Witch-king of Angmar to haunt these places, these fearsome creatures enchant their victims with a spell that makes them lose all control and then takes them to their tomb where they die without waiting…

For viewers of the film adaptations, this name is not very evocative. Except perhaps for those who might have seen the Russian adaptation of 1991. However, in the first volume of the literary saga, it is the Spirits of the Mounds who capture the four hobbits, Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin, and it is Tom Bombadil himself who comes to their rescue.

With their large, almost skeletal silhouette, their cold appearance, their piercing scream, their hypnotic voice and their large blue illuminated eyes, these creatures of darkness must be frightening – as the first visual suggests. Half-Nazgul, half-wraith of the army of the dead.

Facing Galadriel, Elrond and the others, the fight between good and evil is played out here and now.

While Hallbrand revealed his true face at the end of season 1, that of Sauron, the Dark Lord, darkness dominates Middle-earth. Posing as an Elf to Celebrimbor, he infiltrates the forges and puts his Machiavellian plan into action. Interviewed by Empirethe actor playing Evil, Charlie Vickers warned:

“Put on your mithril, the Dark Lord is ready to rule.”

If Galadriel was wrong about him, now she’s ready to fix her mistake. But will she be able to stop Sauron in time, before it’s too late? Find out on Prime Video on August 29.
