Roqya: the witch hunt begins with Golshifteh Farahani and Jeremy Ferrari (extracts)

Roqya addresses the resurrection of witchcraft, which occurred recently because of a scandal invoked by a reality TV candidate…

Nour lives in the suburbs, in a city where the kingpins reign who like to establish their authority in the halls of testosterone-filled buildings. The animal kingdom seems to lie at the heart of Nour’s interests, since her home lives off the smuggling of exotic animals. Here is an extract from Roqya :

Chased by the enraged crowd after a failed consultation, Nour cannot captivate the inhabitants of the neighborhood, inhabited by an indomitable ferocity. The smuggler then finds herself separated from her son. From there, a frantic race begins to save him from the clutches of obscurantist excesses…

When writing the screenplay we started from a possible uberization of witchcraft, an idea that had been in my head for a while (…) but my film is not just a film about roqya or occult sciences. Above all, it is the story of a woman who refuses to submit and who finds herself wrongly accused of witchcraft because her independence is disturbing,” said Said Belktibiadirector.

Said Belktibia attempts for the first time to make a social feature film, with Golshifteh Farahani (Tyler Rake, Girls of the Sun) and the comedian Jeremy Ferrari. The actress spoke about the character of Nour, which she played:

There is always doubt about Nour’s beliefs (…) Nour is beautiful but she is the opposite of an object of desire because she scares men. She has a big mouth and doesn’t mince her words. She is also determined to develop her very lucrative business. From a physical point of view, with this manhunt, I never stopped running but never got tired or out of breath. I was a tank!

Roqya will make his incantation in theaters on May 1, 2024.
