Season 3 of Big Little Lies is on track, teases Nicole Kidman

The actress makes this announcement five years after the end of season 2, which seemed to put an end to the intrigues of Monterey.

Since the end of the second season of Big Little Liesin 2019, rumors are rife around a potential third part which could bring together again Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley And Zoë Kravitz for HBO. Rumors from the corridors mainly fueled by Nicole Kidman herself, who, as early as 2020, urged fans to “stay alert while waiting for more news”.

“This one has already said too much,” quips Reese Witherspoon. She and Nicole Kidman were invited by Vanity Fair to meet again five years later, to talk about the future of the series. A future that the two women do not want to reveal, out of superstition:

“I gave free rein to my enthusiasm, concedes Nicole Kidman, before censoring herself. We don't need to say more. It's often said that you should never talk about something until you've done it, because if you talk about doing it, it's the dopamine from the action that makes you feel like you did it. It’s a scientific study.”

However, his own scruples did not prevent him from adding a few moments later: “We are making great strides. Liane (Moriarty) working on the book. We are on the right track”.

A statement that corresponds to information that had already leaked last January: Casey Bloysthe big boss of HBO, then announced that Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman were in contact with Liane Moriarty, author of the novel on which the series is inspired to assess to what extent her universe could expand, and the plot become more complex.

Recall that in the first season of Big Little Lies, five women living in the wealthy town of Monterey are involved in a tragic event towards which the entire plot converges as the episodes progress. In the second season, which many considered less successful, the five characters must face the consequences of this event, embodied, in part, by the character of Meryl StreepMary Louise.

Two years separate the two seasons of the show, created by David E. Kelley and mainly carried out by Jean-Marc Vallée before his death (with the assistance ofAndrea Arnold for season 2). Five years later, the season 3 project seems to be confirmed. Several reasons explain this long hiatus. The first, apparently being resolved, is the absence of a sequel to the original novel.

The second, more tragic, was the death of Jean-Marc Vallée, in 2021, which notably made Zoë Kravitz say that she could not “imagine continuing without him”.

The third concerned the schedules of the five actresses. In 2021, when the idea of a season 3 was already bubbling up, David E. Kelley declared:

“This idea hasn't progressed very far yet. Nicole herself has plenty of projects in the works, about five projects coming up. Reese (Witherspoon) is just as busy. Zoë (Kravitz) will be Catwoman in The Batman. And many more. All the stars of Big Little Lies are extremely busy. But we love the show and the characters so much that none of us have given up on the idea of getting the group back together again.”

Perhaps the planets will soon align to give HBO a third season of this women's series, which Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman seem to be calling for?
