Sound of freedom: a harmless (or almost) little turnip (review)

The summer 2023 phenomenon at the American box office does not deserve all the noise it has produced

So that’s it Sound of Freedom ? The surprise success of the summer in American theaters (more than 180 million dollars in revenue for 15 million budget) is being released in France thanks to the distributor of Catholic religious films Saje (which has the anti-abortion film in its catalog Unplanned and the production of Puy du fou Win or die). And what we discover is not the much-advertised conspiracy firestorm: it is simply a very lazy, bad thriller, vanity project of the actor Jim Caviezel (the actor of The passion of Christa fundamentalist Catholic, who is one of the superstars of American conspiracy theory) who plays a very American federal agent who sets out to save South American kids from a pedophile network (we call it a white savior in the jargon of clichés). Sound of Freedom is, above all, interminably listless, and features by far the laziest action scene we’ve seen in 2023. All this isn’t a big deal, surely? There is worse, in fact: by aestheticizing the ordeal suffered by children in beautiful, well-composed shots (angelic music and strokes of heavenly light to support), the director seems to transform them into real martyrs – and to thereby justify their atrocious suffering, which becomes an inspiration for the faithful. No, really, you have better things to do with your money and your time than spending 2h11 in front of Sound of freedom. Goodbye Man on Firefor example, much more powerful on all levels.

Of Alejandro Monteverde. With Jim Caviezel, Bill Camp, Mira Sorvino… Duration 2h11. Released November 15, 2023
