Six years later Ready Player Onethe following Ready Player Two finally seems to be in the pipeline. Adapted from Ernest Cline's second novel published in 2020, the sequel will not be produced, however, by Steven Spielberg.

Speaking to Showbiz411 at Universal Pictures' post-Oscars gala, the filmmaker gave an update on the construction site Ready Player Two. And he confirms: “We're in the discovery phase, trying to figure out what the next step might look like…”

He then specifies: “No, I will not direct the film“But he assured that he will still be a producer and should therefore largely participate in the development.

Ready Player One was released on March 29, 2018 and grossed $600 million at the box office.
