Superman: Henry Cavill in Christopher Reeve’s original costume

Zack Snyder shared a photo from the actor’s audition for Man of Steel.

Man of Steel will return this evening on TF1 Séries Films, when James Gunn is in the middle of casting for his new version of Superman. Its filming is due to start in March, so the director is busy bringing together the ideal actors for his blockbuster responsible for relaunching the DCU.

As usual, he provides details of this process on social networks, and last week, he responded to an Internet user that by tradition, each actor selected to go to the final audition phase of Superman Legacy had done his test in the suit from one of the previous interpreters of the superhero. David Corenswet was no exception to the rule.

A little over ten years ago now, Zack Snyder did the same with Henry Cavill, by offering him the opportunity to pass his final audition in the costume of the original Superman, Christopher Reeve. Here are the details, while waiting to see his film again on television.

Henry Cavill: “Man of Steel, he’s not dad’s Superman”

“As soon as I saw him, I knew he was going to be my Superman.”

Zack Snyder repeated several times that he had been bluffed by Henry Cavill during his audition for the role of Clark Kent. In 2017, he shared a photo of the actor at precisely that moment. The costume of Man of Steel having not yet been manufactured, the British actor had to try that of Christopher Reeve In Richard Donner’s blockbuster released in 1978.

Cavill was not as muscular then as he is today, but his confidence pleased the director. “When you arrive in a room dressed in the costume and no one is laughing, it’s because you’ve won,” he remembers. “When he came out, we saw that everyone was taking him seriously, whereas they had laughed during the audition of other actors, even very talented ones. Henry put it on, and he radiated. You could feel his self-confidence, his calm… and I immediately said to myself: ‘Wow. Okay, that’s Superman.’

What if Henry Cavill had been James Bond in Casino Royale?

Henry Cavill was hired for Man of Steelreleased in 2013 at the cinema, then replayed the superhero in Batman V Superman and in Justice League, before making a short appearance in Black Adam, in 2022. This gave fans hope of finding him soon in a Man of Steel 2but Warner Bros. changed its plans and now the saga is being rebooted, headed by James Gunn, therefore, and Peter Safran. Superman Legacy will be the first super-film of the new DCU. Release scheduled for June 2025.
