Terry Gilliam will receive an Honorary Crystal at the 2024 Annecy Festival

The American-British director and designer will also give a masterclass on this occasion.

Although we already knew that Wes Anderson would come and give a masterclass at the next Annecy International Animated Film Festival, the organizers announced during a press conference that another American filmmaker (by birth, naturalized British) would be honored during this edition. It is Terry Gilliammember of Monty Python and director, among others, of Brazil, Las Vegas Paranoid And Army of the 12 Monkeys.

Marcel Jeandirector and artistic delegate of the gathering announced that in addition to leading a cinema lesson, Gilliam would receive the Crystal of Honor:

“An Honorary Crystal will be presented this year to Terry Gilliam, who will be present as a special guest, and not leastdid he declare. We are very happy to reward this other great name in cinema. Terry Gilliam is the author of major works in live action but as we know, he is someone who comes from animation.

His work has inspired many artists, both when we talk about paper cut animation but also with all its impact on comedy, its relationship to humor. All of this changed the perception of animation and the perception of cinema.

It will be a pleasure to welcome Terry Gilliam for a masterclass which will take place on the opening Sunday of the festival (…) and to present him, during the opening ceremony, with a Crystal for his entire career. ”

Terry Gilliam has several strings to his bow. In parallel with his triumph with Monty Python, alongside John Cleese, Graham Chapman and others, he discovered a passion for animation, which he infused into his works. In 1974, he made a short film, Miracle of Flight using the technique of “cut paper” (“cut-out” in English). Then there is Story Time five years later, another animated short film. And that's without counting the film's animated interludes and interventions Monty Python: Holy Grail! or The meaning of life which he took charge of.

So many reasons which explain that the name of Terry Gilliam is added to the list of recipients of the Annecy Crystal of Honor. The American-British filmmaker thus succeeds Michel Ocelot, Jennifer Lee, Jean-François Laguionie, Brad Bird, Isao Takahata, Florence Miailhe, Didier Brunner or Georges Schwizgebel.

The Annecy International Animated Film Festival will take place from June 9 to 15, 2024.
