The Academy of Oscars announces the creation of a brand new award
This is the first time since 2001 that the Academy of Oscars has created a new category.
The Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced a pleasant surprise this Thursday morning. A new category is preparing to enter the Oscars ceremony, that of best casting. This category will come into play during the 98th ceremony for films released in 2025. This is the first new category created by the Academy since 2001. The casting directors section was created in July 2013 and has nearly 160 members.
“Casting directors play a vital role in filmmaking, and as the Academy evolves, we’re proud to add casting to the disciplines we recognize and celebratedeclared the CEO of the Academy, Bill Kramerand the president of the Academy, Janet Yang, We congratulate the members of the Casting Directors Branch for this important milestone, and for their commitment and diligence throughout the process.“
In a joint statement, Richard Hicksdirector of Academy Casting, Kim Taylor-Colman And Debra Zanegovernors of the section, declared: “On behalf of the members of the Academy Casting Directors Branch, we would like to thank the Board of Governors, the Awards Committee and the Academy leadership for their support. This award is a well-deserved recognition of the exceptional talents of our casting directors and is a testament to the efforts of our branch.”
Category eligibility rules and voting will be announced in April 2025 along with the full rules for the 2026 Academy Awards. Award details will be determined by the Academy’s Board of Governors and its administrative leadership at a later date .
The big forgotten ones from the 2024 Oscar nominations
The fight for recognition for casting directors dates back to the late 1990s. However, it did not have widespread support at the time, so the demand for recognition never came to fruition.
In an interview last year, the director of Chapter 4 of John Wick, Chad Stahelski, spoke about the discussions taking place within the Academy to add a category for stunts, which has significant support within the Hollywood ranks. Earlier this year, the Golden Globes introduced a Box Office Achievement Award, which went to barbie of Greta Gerwig.
This year it’s the comedian and television host Jimmy Kimmel Who will host the ceremony. The latter will take place in Los Angeles on March 10. Oppenheimer of Christopher Nolan is in the lead with 13 nominations this year while Barbie from Greta Gerwig counts 8, to the great dismay of Ryan Gosling…
