The creator of Hill House will direct a new The Exorcist film!

A “radical new vision” which will not (at all) be a sequel to the failure of 2023.

They were made to meet. Mike Flanaganthe most brilliant creator of horror series in recent years will cross paths with The Exorcistthe most cult film of its genre.

The American press, which confirms the news, speaks of an independent film, based on the world of The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty, the original 1971 novel, which inspired the cult film William Friedkin (in 1973). Blumhouse promises a “radical new vision.” Mike Flanagan should therefore not sign a remake of the original, nor even a sequel to The Exorcist: Devotionthe 2023 film signed David Gordon Green whose events took place after those of Friedkin's classic. Given the disappointing box office (126 million worldwide revenue), the Blumhouse studio decided to cancel the trilogy which was initially planned.

Mike Flanagan will therefore have free hands to redo The Exorcist in his sauce, as he sees fit. And there is reason to be excited since the director – who will also produce – has real (good) ideas in horror. We owe him in particular The Haunting of Hill House (2018), one of the best creations of the genre of the 21st century, or even the dark one Midnight Mass (2021) and more recently the fantastic Fall of the House of Usher (2023). Mike Flanagan had also dared to follow Shiningby adapting Doctor Sleep by Stephen King at the cinema.

The Exorcist is one of the reasons I became a filmmaker, and it's an honor to have the chance to try something new, bold and terrifying in his world.” he promises in his press release.

Universal and Blumhouse are counting on him to restore the brand's image. They bought the rights to The Exorcist to Morgan Creek for $400 million in 2021…
