The director of The Three Musketeers listened to the public for the sequel

Milady will be brighter than D’Artagnan, Martin Bourboulon assures us.

The new issue of First (n°546 with Gilles Lellouche on the cover) has just arrived on newsstands, and among its numerous interviews, Martin Bourboulon tells us about his diptych The three Musketeers. A few months later D’Artagnan, Milady will arrive in cinemas on December 13, and its director promises us that this sequel will be “brighter” than the first part. Because he directed more Eva Green, François Civil, Vincent Cassel and all the others on location, the scenario inspired by the novel by Alexandre Dumas being more “visual” in its second part, but also because it was able to take into account the opinions of the spectators.

Because if D’Artagnan overall received positive reviews, some criticisms were raised about its too dark appearance. Which did not escape Bourboulon. Extract.

Milady is clearer, brighter than D’Artagnan. But this difference in tone between the two parts was written in history. D’Artagnan centers on the hero’s journey. We follow his arrival in Paris, his integration into the corps of musketeers and we move from the Hôtel de Tréville to the corridors of Versailles… The scenario of Milady is on the contrary more visual and plays on many exteriors. There is the siege of La Rochelle, but also numerous scenes by the sea.

That being said, I admit that we took into account the feedback from spectators. We chose to offer brighter, clearer and more brilliant colorimetry following the reviews of the first film. We wanted to play more on contrasts. In D’Artagnanthere was, it’s true, a somewhat dull image: the second part had to be more brilliant.

From the beginning, the overall aesthetic was based on a simple idea: the viewer had to believe in the story. Beyond a look “dark”our obsession was to craft a patinated image, which would “TRUE”. There was dust, weathered skin, slightly faded makeup, worn costumes… But along the way, we undoubtedly
lost in contrast and light and this is what we wanted to recover in post-production on
Milady. And since the first film came out while we were still working on Miladywe were able to refine at the right time.”

Eva Green also confides in First on his return to Milady. An interview to be found in its entirety in bookstores or on our online kiosk. Good reading !
