The Eternals: the two post-credits scenes explained

Warning, cosmic-scale spoilers ahead.

We repeat it in the preamble, but obviously we are preparing to happily spoil the end credits for you. Eternals, the Marvel superfilm released at the end of 2021 in theaters, which will return this evening on TMC. And which includes, tradition requires, additional scenes potentially teasing future events in the MCU.

The Eternals: a nice reboot of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (review)

The Eternals therefore has two post-credits scenes. Let's start at the end. The very last scene requires the least explanation, as it is in the continuity of the film. We see Dane Whitman (Kit Harington) opening an old box containing an evil-looking sword, from which emanates a black substance reacting to contact with Dane's hands.

During the film, Dane talks about a complicated family legacy that he doesn't really know how to handle. In fact, it's quite simple: Dane is the human alter ego of the Black Knight. Appearing in 1955 at Marvel, Black Knight is a descendant of a long line of English knights who are more or less vigilantes. His most famous incarnation is precisely that of Dane, who becomes a member of the Avengers wielding the “Ebony Blade”, a super-sword forged from meteoric metal and enchanted by Merlin himself. Dane should therefore reappear in a future Marvel film.

Bob Iger Reportedly Cancels The Eternals 2 and Other Marvel Movie Projects

The other scene, the first, is the most surprising. Some Eternals are in their ship, the Domo, wandering in space in search of their companions Sersi, Kingo and Sprite… When two characters teleport there by surprise. The first is a kind of grotesque little gnome, burping beer drinker with an Irish accent (and played by Patton Oswalt), named Pip the Troll, who introduces his master: Eros of Titan, played by Harry Styles (the ex-One Direction singer already appeared in Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk).

Under his appearance as a seductive space trickster hides another Eternal, who is in the Marvel comics the half-brother of Thanos (do you get it? Eros and Thanatos, love and death)… and who will notably part of the Avengers under the name Starfox. Eros, who has a sphere allowing him to contact Arishem, the Celestial having kidnapped the three other Eternals, and wants to help the heroes find their friends. To be continued in The Eternals 2 ?

Probably not, since Marvel doesn't really seem to be pushing the idea of a direct sequel to the film. Chloe Zhaowhich is receiving frankly very average reviews compared to the MCU standard…

At the box office either, The Eternals did not receive the expected success, so today, its sequel has still not been announced, and everything that had been teased in the film to expand the MCU universe has ultimately never again been cited. Harry Styles returning to Marvel, that doesn't seem to be planned for right away…
