The highlights of the 15th Lyon Lumière Festival

The high mass of heritage cinema which will celebrate Wim Wenders will take place from October 14 to 22. Insights into programming.

Light Prize to Wim Wenders

The author of Paris,Texas and Wings of Desire is the fifteenth personality to win what Thierry Frémaux, the great organizer of the Lyon raid, likes to define as “ the Nobel Prize for Cinema » It was Clint Eastwood who in 2009 was left behind, followed more or less closely by Ken Loach, Martin Scorsese, Wong Kar-wai, Francis Ford Coppola and Catherine Deneuve. For film buffs, this celebration of the German filmmaker will be an opportunity to check what remains of a polymorphous work including the latest fiction, Perfect Days, was noticed at the last Cannes Film Festival. What about, for example, his Americana period with The American Friend, The state of things Or Paris Texas ? Is his poetic vision of a Berlin just before the collapse of the wall (Wings of Desire) still has things to tell us? Handsome player Wenders will offer in his carte blanche, two Frenchies: Good work by Claire Denis and Enter the Void by Gaspar Noé.

Retro Robert Altman

This selective retrospective of the American Robert Altman (1925 – 2006), a sort of big brother for the new generation of New Hollywood authors (Scorsese, Coppola and others), is called The big circus. A way to celebrate the iconoclastic character of the man. Besides the essentials: MASH, John McCabe, Private, Nashville or Short Cutsthe festival-goer must not under any circumstances miss the rare We are all thieves (1974), rereading of the novel by Edward Anderson, previously adapted by Nick Ray for his Lovers of the night (1948). During the Great Depression, we follow the impossible love story between a young man just escaped from prison (Keith Carradine) and a woman barely out of childhood (Shelley Duvall). Here’s almost enough reason to head to Lumière this year.

The Princes of the City by Taylor Hackford

Kezako? From Taylor Hackford, one of the many guests of honor of this 15th edition, we immediately think of Officer and Gentleman, Night Sun (“ Say youuuuuu, say meeeee…. “) or Ray… So we’re going to look at these (unknown?) Princes of the city aka Bound by Honor, a 1993 film, about Latino gangs in Los Angeles. Its duration – three hours – promises to be epic. In the depths of the cast we find Billy Bob Thornton, Ving Rhames and the lively Danny Trejo. We will be there !

30 years of American Class

Please note, this film is not a film about cycling. » Those who already smile at this opening sentence know what we are talking about. Thirty years ago, long before The Artist and others OSS 117, Michel Hazanavicius offered our “ shitty world ” this American class, a great diversion that has become a cult object. Long invisible before the internet circulated it undercover, this hilarious mashup of several Warner films re-dialogued and post-synchronized, is now displayed without shame and therefore, in several Lyon cinemas during the festival. Michel Hazanavicius will be there to blow out the 30 candles. Haste.

Preview Killers of the Flower Moon by Martin Scorsese

If the Lyon Lumière Festival is dedicated to heritage, the program presents numerous previews. Discovered during the last Cannes Film Festival, Killers of the Flower MoonMartin Scorsese’s latest feature film, inspired by David Grann’s live investigation, The American note, will be presented there. This twilight fresco takes us into the heart of the Osage Indian community in Oklahoma in the 1920s. The population, based on lands fertile in oil, became the prey of pioneers eager for easy money. The FBI is investigating a series of mysterious murders. DiCaprio as an anti-hero is perfect. De Niro in overalls isn’t bad either. But the real intensity of the film is entirely on the face of the sovereign Lily Gladstone, already spotted in Certain Women by Kelly Reichardt. A splendor.
