Toledano and Nakache bow to Scorsese at the French box office

Killers of the Flower Moon tops Wednesday’s new releases rankings (Source: Le Film Français).

This Wednesday, big new releases were expected, both French and American. The new film of Martin Scorsese Killers of the Flower Moonwith Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone And Robert de Niro, takes the lead in the ranking with 47,589 entries (excluding previews). It is much superior to the author’s last fiction film released in the cinema, Silence (2016, The Irishman released directly on Netflix in 2019), which had only 70 tickets sold on its first day for a total of 318,318 seats in March 2017.

Despite the length of his historical film, Scorsese slightly ahead of the duo Toledano And Nakachevery popular with the French public, whose film A difficult year sits in second place with 43,045 countermarks spread over 667 copies, while Killers of the Flower Moon is released on 528 copies, or 139 fewer. It was two big juggernauts this Wednesday, since the film of Toledano And Nakache also featured a brilliant cast (Jonathan Cohen, Pio Marmaï, Noémie Merlant). However, it’s a slightly lower start than their previous film Exceptional, released in May 2019 with a first day peaking at 72,637 spectators (and having had an excellent accumulation of more than 2 million entries in January 2020). The duo is accustomed to big successes since the historic case ofUntouchables, recording more than 19 million admissions in 2011.

In third place on the podium, it is an animated film which diversifies the French box office. Trolls 3 follows the first two with 36,361 tickets sold but has a higher number of copies (692 on French territory). It should be noted, however, that this third part starts below the previous two. In 2016, The Trolls was a hit with 94,434 admissions on the first day and the sequel plummeted to 38,757 spectators in October 2020 (in the middle of a pandemic, remember).

Counting previews, the trend reverses. A difficult year goes to first position, followed by Trolls 3 and Scorsese’s film is relegated to third place with a respective cumulative total of 121,598, 82,568 and 47,589 admissions, Killers of the Flower Moon not having benefited from a preview.

The rest of the ranking displays a very big gap with this top 3: Linda wants chicken starts in fourth position (2,155 entries), Wim Wenders makes his big comeback with his documentary Anselm. The sound of time (2,046 entries) in fifth position and The Tourouges and the Toubleus comes in sixth place (1,514 entries). Note also that among these new releases, three of these films are family animated films aimed at a young audience: Trolls 3, Linda wants chicken And The Tourouges and the Toubleus.

The ranking closes with the new release in France of The Human Comedy of Koji Fukada (produced and produced in 2008) with 372 tickets sold and A woman on the roof ofAnna Jadowskawhich attracted 59 curious people to the rooms.
