The director confirms having approached the Top Gun star, but…

Even though he wears a hood over his head for 2 hours, this is undoubtedly the role for which he is best known: Jackie Earle Haley was a perfect Rorschach in the Watchmen of Zack Snyderin 2009.

And yet, Tom Cruise almost played the character, as the director confirmed on the Happy Sad Confused podcast this week. He first reveals that he approached the star of Top Gun for him to play Ozymandias:

“I wanted him to play Ozymandias, but Tom wanted to play Rorschach. Obviously, he could have done it perfectly. But we already had Jackie (Earle Haley) for the role. And Jackie is really amazing. But yeah, I would certainly have thought of Tom, in retrospect, if I hadn't had Jackie.”

Tom Cruise did not play Ozymandias either, since it is Matthew Goode who ended up playing the role of genius Adrian Veidt.
