We decipher the finale of Loki, season 2: everything you need to remember for the MCU

What happened in this last episode full of crazy twists? This is what Loki will change for the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It’s definitely the best Marvel series on Disney Plus. And by far. The last episode of season 2 of Loki concluded in a breathtaking way the space-time adventure of the God of Malice turned TVA agent turned savior of the Multiverse. A funny, moving finale that shakes up the Marvel Cinematic Universe, laying the foundations for future films Avengers. Spoiler alert!

Loki is now several centuries older

It’s not clear how old the Gods of Asgard are in the MCU. But now that Loki masters his temporal shift, he can travel at will in space-time. He is literally immortal. So, while trying to save the TVA, he learned ALL physics, quantum mechanics and more, from Professor OB. A personal challenge that took him “several centuries” we are told!

The redemption arc reaches its conclusion

But even with that, he couldn’t stop the temporal branches from exploding. For what ? Victor Timely puts forward an explanation: by definition, it is impossible to create a machine capable of containing infinity. However, the branches have been expanding infinitely since Sylvie killed He Who Remains, guardian of the sacred Timeline in the Citadel of the End Times. Loki will therefore return to this key moment, at the end of season 1, to stop Sylvie. Kang’s Variant then teaches him that his timeline management ring has security: it will systematically delete all superfluous branches to keep only the sacred timeline. Even if it means destroying VAT. And Loki can’t do anything about it. So the latter decides to “ change the equation » and break this ring that controls the timelines. The One Who Abides reminds him that this would result in a “brutal war where nothing survives, not even the sacred timeline“. What should we do when faced with this biblical dilemma? Loki has a revelation and forges his own path. “I know what I want, what kind of God I must be – for you (Sylvie), for all of you“. Loki will sacrifice himself to save the multiverse and take control. The villain who became hero of humanity, of all humanities, has completed his redemptive arc.

Loki Who Remains

Thanks to his divine powers, he breaks the ring of timelines, then revives them around him, through him. Walking to the remains of the Citadel of the End Times, that of the One Who Abides, he sits on a new shimmering throne, gathers the branches together. They now form a new harmonious whole, which takes the form of Yggdrasill, the World Tree in Nordic mythology, the one which connects the Nine Kingdoms!

Loki allowed the branches of the multiverse to continue through him. Loki became Loki Who Dwellsthe God of all timelines. The God of Storiesin a way, as he is portrayed at one point in the comics.

What consequences for the MCU?

In the epilogue of this season 2, we understand that the war presaged by He Who Remains is indeed taking place, since we are told of a meeting between TVA executives, in a “War Room”. This war could well materialize in the next films Avengers: The Kang Dynasty And Avengers: Secret Wars.

Above all, Marvel offered itself the possibility of continuing without Jonathan Majors if he wishes. Indeed, in the final moments, we are shown that the young Victor Timely of 1868 is not going to find the famous TVA manual, thrown through his window. Which implies that he is not going to become Kang the Conqueror. Its countless Variants that still exist do not know that they are being hunted by the TVA. Mobius notes that one of these Variants has caused chaos in an adjacent realm of Earth-616. A fun reference to the quantum realm ofAnt-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, where Kang was the villain. “But they managed it“, concludes Mobius.

So will Kang return? Or Kang Dynasty Will he talk more about Kang’s heirs than Kang himself? In any case, his successor is already on the throne: an omnipotent royal Loki ends the series with a little smile for his friend Mobius. As if he were capable of following from his tree everything that happens in HIS timelines…

Where is Ravonna Renslayer at the end?

Looking at the way the judge is dressed in her last scene, we understand that the TVA returned to Chicago in 1868. Renslayer was probably “pruned” just before she could deliver the TVA manual to Victor Timely. In the first season, we were told that people thus “pruned” end up in the “Void” from which it is almost impossible to escape. So Ravonna probably ended up in Alioth’s smoky belly.
