We know more about Twisters, the sequel to Twister

Still produced by Amblin, it will be worn by Daisy Edgar-Jones (Normal People) and Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick).

This Sunday, W9 will rebroadcast Twister. So while waiting for the first images of its sequel/reboot, we take stock of this project.

In the summer of 2020, we learned that Universal Pictures and Warner Bros were working on a remake of Twisterthe film by Jan de Bont (Speed) from 1996 where Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton played tornado chasers. At a time when Hollywood is multiplying sequels, reboots and others “legacyquels”no surprise in wanting to relaunch this concept which had brought in nearly 500 million dollars at the box office at the time!

Not to mention that the subject of natural disasters is even more relevant 26 years later. Joseph Kosinski (oblivion) was supposed to be in charge of directing for Frank Marshall, who headed the Amblin studio with Steven Spielberg, but he has since been very busy with Top Gun: Maverick. Either the sequel to an even older action film which triumphed all over the world upon its release.

End of 2022, Deadline gave news of this new Twisterwhile he was certain that Kosinski would not be able to direct it, too busy with his big film about Formula 1, designed with Brad Pitt and champion Lewis Hamilton, for Apple. The production therefore looked for a replacement: if Dan Trachtenberg (Prey) was no longer in the race either, Travis Knight (Bumblebee) and the duo behind Free SoloJimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vaserhelyi have been in talks to take over the helm of this new film titled Twisters. Its screenplay is by Mark L. Smith (The Revenant, The Midnight Sky), and the article specified at that time that it would primarily follow Jo’s daughter (Helen Hunt). His interpreter still had to be cast, and it was not yet known how the death of Bill Paxton, who played Bill, the heroine’s companion in the first film, will be handled, but who died in 2017, at only 61 years old. .

A year and a half later, Twisters has progressed well. The film will be helmed by the Oscar-winning director Minari, Lee Isaac Chungand in the casting, we will find one of the key actors of the last Top Gun, Glen Powell. As well as Daisy Edgar Jonesthe young British actress revealed in the hit series Normal People. Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Daryl McCormack and Maura Tierney will also be there.

The actor, currently starring in the rom-com Everything But You, however affirmed that it would not really be a direct sequel. Has the idea of following the tornado chaser’s daughter been abandoned? Here is what Powell detailed to Vogue at the end of December 2023: “It definitely won’t be a reboot. We are not trying to repeat the same story as in the first. It will be completely original. There won’t be any characters from the first film in this one, so it won’t strictly speaking be a sequel. It will be a single-player story set in the modern world.”

He adds that the concept of Twisterswhich benefited from a comfortable budget from Universal and Warner Bros., will follow the advice given to him by Tom Cruise on the set of Maverick.

“He told me : ‘If you want to make films of a certain ambition, you will have to understand what connects it to the world, to people from all territories.’ Twisters checks this box, since men vs. the weather is a perfectly universal idea. The film will show how we have no power in the face of such cataclysmic forces.” he explains.
