What are we watching this weekend? Nolan’s bombshell, a French sci-fi gem, the latest John Wick…

Cinema, streaming, VOD, TV… Find advice from the editorial staff every Friday.

The film in theaters: Mars Express by Jérémie Perin

An investigation between Earth and the red planet that is absolutely dizzying in its staging and its ambitions. More than an animated film for adults, Mars Express is a colossal piece of science fiction, at the crossroads of Blade Runner And Ghost in the Shell. The rest of the world will inevitably envy us.

The film on VOD and DVD: Oppenheimer by Christopher Nolan

barbie Or Oppenheimer ? Both films have just arrived on VOD, and if we assume that the sleepover with Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie appeals to you, our heart is more inclined towards Christopher Nolan’s fabulous XXL bomb ride… which is also available in DVD and Blu-ray – including a big version with bonus features that last as long as the film. If you buy it, you will please Guillermo Del Toro and you will be “the guardian of these films for generations to come“, as he nicely tweeted.

Watch Oppenheimer on VOD on Première Max

Series : Scott Pilgrim takes flight

Sold as a simple adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s comics, Scott Pilgrim takes flight is in fact a meta and modern rereading of the comics and Edgar Wright’s film. Unpredictable and superbly animated by the Japanese studio Science SARU, this eight-episode series deconstructs and reconstructs with quite astonishing panache.

Watch Scott Pilgrim Takes Flight on Netflix.

The film on TV: John Wick chapter 4

A new test (of strength) for John: will this astonishing chapter 4 be shown on the small screen? 169 minutes of (almost) non-stop action (this is the other major film of more or less three hours of 2023, with Babylon, Oppenheimer And Killers of the Flower Moon) can they watch innocently on TV? Is Chad Stahelski’s massive rock opera a simple act Friday evening? We’ll check it out this evening.

The classic : JFK by Oliver Stone

60 years after the assassination of JFK, Oliver Stone’s 1992 film returns to TV, in its extended version created almost 20 years later (2001). With all its dissected conspiracy theories, its countless stars (Kevin Costner! Gary Oldman! Tommy Lee Jones! Sissy Spacek! Joe Pesci!) and its intense trial scenes, it is a must-see of the genre.

Watch JFK Friday at 9:05 p.m. on France 5 (and streaming on France.tv from November 25)

The film in streaming: Compartment No. 6 by Juho Kuosmanen

It’s a simple story. “Straight,” as old Lynch would have said. The Moscow-Murmansk trip, at the end of the 80s, of young Laura. On the train, this Finnish student will cross paths with Ljoha, a young, uncouth and initially worrying worker. Step by step, these two solitudes will learn to overcome their prejudices and their initial repugnance. Behind this ephemeral love story, moving in its simplicity, there is also an impressionist portrait of the end of communism. This film (Grand Prize at the Cannes 21 festival) seems touched by grace.

The documentary : Primary by Robert Drew

In 1960, Robert Drew followed the American Democratic primaries, pitting John Fitzgerald Kennedy against Hubert Humphrey. Favoring small mobile cameras and lightweight sound recording equipment, he plunges us into the heart of the event by capturing moments full of truth (Humphrey challenged by a worker, JFK cutting through the crowd during a meeting) and invents everything simply the modern documentary. A great classic of the genre.
