When will we see Dune 3? “In Hollywood we think about release dates before quality”

Denis Villeneuve takes stock of his saga, just before the release of the second part.

Denis Villeneuve this week the intense promotion of A second part. Interviewed by the British version of The Timeshe takes advantage of this long interview to confirm his desire to tackle a third adaptation of the literary universe of Frank Herbert: a film derived from Messiah of Dune.

“Of course we want to shoot a third film, but I don't want to rush, he explains. The danger in Hollywood is that people get excited and only think about release dates, not quality.”

Before shooting this third part of DuneWarner Bros will unveil its spin-off series, recently retitled The Prophecy. Denis Villeneuve is only a producer there. He should have directed the pilot, but plans changed: he ended up being the co-showrunner Alison Schapker (Altered Carbon) -with Diane Ademu-John (The Originals) – which stages the episodes for Max. They also rewrote the script of Jon Spaihts (co-writer of Dune) and Dana Calvo from this prequel which will notably be carried by Emily Watson (Breaking the Waves), Indira Varma (Game Of Thrones) And Travis Fimmel (Vikings). Release planned for this fall.

Dune 3 could it enter production this year to be released in 2025 or 2026? Nothing less sure. As Denis Villeneuve suggests, the director and his team want to take the time to do things well.

As early as 2022, his co-writer Jon Spaihts already mentioned this idea: “The Messiah of Dune is the next book, and it is one of three books, with Dune, The Messiah of Dune And The children of Dune, which tell the life of the characters that we discover in the first novel” (…) Then, there is a huge jump in time and the series gradually becomes stranger and more epic. But The Messiah of Dune picks up a few years after the conclusion of Dune, and yes Denis Villeneuve spoke seriously about also shooting this film, as a conclusion to the trilogy.

Zendaya impatiently awaits Dune 3: “If Denis calls me, I’ll say yes”

Villeneuve has also previously expressed the wish to film another project between Dune 2 And 3. His blockbuster on Cleopatra? Or his sci-fi film Meeting with Ramainspired by a cult novel by Arthur C. Clarke (2001, A Space Odyssey) ? He has dreamed of adapting it for several years. Unless he is soon hired on a James Bond ?

Only one thing is certain: when he will have completed his trilogy Dune , Denis Villeneuve will not shoot number 4even if his blockbusters with Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya are successful: he has already announced that he would hand over to another director if Warner Bros wanted to continue the saga.
