Why Josh Brolin Thought Hans Zimmer Wasn’t Suitable for Dune 2

The actor had to collaborate with the composer for a musical sequence, giving rise to a unique anecdote.

If we are not specialists in Dune and from the work of Frank Herbert, we probably do not know that the character of Gurney Halleck, played by Josh Brolin, is both a brilliant military tactician, a rigorous instructor but also an outstanding music lover and musician. In the mythology created by Herbert, this character plays and composes in his free time, strumming the strings of his beacon.

Denis Villeneuve had cut a scene in the first part presenting us this musical side of the character but we will be entitled to it in Dune: Part Two, on the cover of the latest paper issue, currently on newsstands. In an interview for Fandangobringing together Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Javier Bardem And Josh Brolinhe explained that his tag scene had been cut from the first film because it was too out of step with the rest of the tone of the film.

When the second film arrived, he (Denis Villeneuve) told me ‘I want Hans (Zimmer) and you were collaborating on the song’”, begins Josh Brolin. Hans Zimmer, the legendary film score composer had already worked on the first part. The task of Josh Brolin was to write the lyrics of the song and that of Hans Zimmer to compose the music.

I sat down for a month, a month and a half, writing lyrics and sending them to Denis and Hans”, says the actor, “And Hans was on vacation, so he would respond by sending me photos of icebergs or sunsets and I would tell him ‘Dude, I gotta work on the song, send me some music for the song.’”

The actor continues his story: “So he sent me music from time to time and they were bad and it became so regular that I ended up wondering if Hans was the right person for this filmhe declares with amusement. And then later, I saw the film and the lyrics of the song are good, and the music is brilliant, it’s genius!

All’s well That ends well. To see Josh Brolin play the tag, see you on February 28, 2024 for the release of Dune: Part Two At the movie theater.
