Will John David Washington succeed his father in Equalizer?
Or will Denzel be digitally rejuvenated for a prequel?
Equalizer 3in theaters next week, will be the last episode of the saga of action carried by Denzel Washington. Spoiler-free, the 68-year-old actor explained that he’d like to leave his character on a high note after three successful episodes of beating bad guys (each episode earned nearly $200 million at the box office).
“I can’t tell you that he found happiness, explains the interested party in the new issue ofEmpire. Not to give you too many plot details, but he’s met someone lovely, he’s in a nice town and he seems at peace. It seems like a good time to stop. I didn’t know we would do three. When we shot the first one, I really had no idea how it would end.”
Antoine Fuqawho staged the three opuses ofEqualizer, also discussed the end of the adventures of Robert McCall with Denzel Washington, even if he admits to having thought of offering his trilogy a prequel. Without the star, suddenly? Or using special effects to rejuvenate it digitally? Unless he bets on another actor to replace him? And why not his own son, John David Washington (tenet)?
“It would be a really good idea to go back, responds the director to Joblo. We could have Michael B. Jordan or someone like him play the young McCall. A few days before this interview, NME had already asked Antoine Fuqua about the possibility of a prequel toEqualizerbut from the perspective of digital rejuvenation, taking as an example what has been done onr Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny with Harrison Ford.
“These days with the advancement of technology, the development of artificial intelligences and that kind of stuff… it’s true that there would be a story to tell about this young McCall: how did he become this person? I actually talked about it quite a bit with Richard Wenk (the screenwriter of the trilogy, editor’s note). Well, for now, it’s brand new. But I look at what is happening with this technology. I watched closely what they had done with Harrison Ford and I know that films using this process will be released soon… I am told that this kind of rejuvenation is being done better and better so yes, I remain attentive to this development.
Antoine Fuqua is obviously not closed to the idea of continuing the adventure Equalizer with a prequel. But it won’t be for now: before any other project, he must shoot his biopic of Michael Jackson…
