Wonka is a superb pure sugar musical (review)

Wonka still dominates a very strong French box office

The battle rages in French cinemas during the Christmas holidays.

For the third consecutive week, Wonka is at the top of the French box office. The prequel to Charlie and the chocolate factory grew by 64% thanks to the school holidays and again brought nearly a million spectators into cinemas, for a total of 2.3 million, clearly establishing itself as the great success of the end-of-year holidays. Before returning to the shoes of Paul Atréides in March with Dune part 2, Timothée Chalamet proves that he has the potential to seduce the public as a headliner.

In line with 2023, which was an excellent year for exhibitors, French cinemas continue to be full at the start of the year, with six films crossing the 500,000 admissions mark. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom still sold 680,000 tickets, and The Three Musketeers – Milady attracted 640,000 new curious people, for a podium identical to that of last week.

Competition is tough, and even a popular phenomenon like Segpas on skis must be satisfied with 4th place despite its 565,000 entries from only 300 copies. In 5th place, wish also continues to sell out, with 540,000 tickets sold. Although not a successful film, Disney Christmas has clearly been a hit with family audiences.

Another big success of the school holidays, the comedy Preserve (with Didier Bourdon and Hakim Jemili) also benefits from a huge boost (+ 62%) to reach a total of 830,000 spectators in two weeks. But the best progression of the week goes to animated films Migration (+98%), which is close to one million entries.

The level is so high thatA matter of honorby Vincent Perez, failed to make the top 10 despite 100,000 tickets sold. Vermin follows him in 12th place and also achieves a very honorable score (87,000 spectators), while the new Kore-eda, Innocence (14th), brings together 67,000 aficionados of the Japanese director, in line with the Good Stars (65,000).
